Event Details

The fourth Psychology of Language Learning conference (PLL4) will be held at Cape Breton University from June 23 to June 25, 2022. The conference has been rescheduled from 2020.

We are interested in receiving proposals on a wide range of topics relating to the many long-running currents of thought and new waves of thinking about psychology of language learning, including:

  • language learners and teachers as people and their various individual characteristics, including self-concept, motivation, identities, beliefs, agency, and emotions;
  • the dynamics of the learning process and interaction with others;
  • context and the psychology of language learning;
  • innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to research;
  • practical classroom applications.

We welcome 250-word proposals (+ a 50 word summary) from researchers and educators working in all contexts. We particularly encourage submissions from graduate students, early career researchers, and educators. PLL4, with its emphasis on forming connections among teachers and researchers around the world, will be an ideal venue for presenting research in progress and practical applications of theoretical concepts.

Types of presentations:

  • Paper
  • Poster
  • Competitive symposium (3 or 4 thematically related papers, with discussion)

There also will be a one-day Pre-Conference (June 22, 2021) on “Mobilizing Positive Psychology in SLA.” This event will feature plenary speakers Sarah Mercer, Tammy Gregersen and Jean-Marc Dewaele, presentations of completed projects, works-in progress and new projects as idea posters that focus on the theme of positive psychology in SLA.

Language policy: The working language of the conference is English; submissions should be written in English.

All proposals will be peer reviewed anonymously by the PLL4 Scientific Committee.  Submissions will be evaluated for their contribution to the field in terms of quality of content, thematic relevance, quality of abstract (organization, clarity of expression).
