AAAL Workshop: Arts-based Research in Applied Linguistics
Members Only - Must be signed in to register.
The 2025 Fall Workshop will provide information and some hands-on experience with arts-based research for applied linguistics. This field is growing quickly; several sessions were held at the 2025 AAAL Conference, and this Workshop will explore the field and its practical implications further.
Following the speaker presentations, there will be a Question & Answer session, a Breakout Session for attendees in small groups to discuss and work with the presentation information directly, and a Going Forward session to discuss the implications of arts-based research for the work of applied linguists.
The Workshop topics and speakers include the following:
First Presenters: Dr. Paula Kalaja and Dr. Silvia Melo-Pfeifer
Title: "Arts-based methodologies in applied linguistic studies: Focus on drawings."
Paula Kalaja is Professor Emerita at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Her research interests include individual learner differences (IDs), multilingualism as subjectively experienced and application of arts-based research methodologies.
Sílvia Melo-Pfeifer is a full professor at the University of Hamburg, Germany, in the field of French and Spanish teacher education.
Second Presenter: Dr. Sofia Chaparro
Title: "Antropoesía, Found Poetry and Transcript-as-verse: Poetry in Applied Linguistics Research."
