AAAL Announces Winner of the 2027 Distinguished Scholarship and Service Award: Angel M. Y. Lin
Angel M. Y. Lin is Chair Professor of Language, Literacy and Social Semiotics in Education at The Education University of Hong Kong and Emeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University, where she held the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Plurilingual and Intercultural Education (2018–2024). She is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of Language Policy.
Dr. Lin’s scholarship has consistently challenged monolingual biases in language education and advanced pedagogies that honour students’ full linguistic repertoires. Her pioneering work on the Multimodalities-Entextualization Cycle (MEC) and recently on ecological languaging competencies (ELC) has reshaped how researchers and practitioners understand language teaching, learning and assessment in plurilingual contexts. With over 200 publications spanning classroom analysis, critical literacies, and human-AI relationality, her research bridges theory and practice in ways that remain grounded in teachers’ and learners’ lived experiences.
A scholar originally from Asia, Dr. Lin has been deeply committed to diversifying the field’s intellectual geography. She was the first Asia-based scholar elected to the AAAL Executive Committee (2006–2009), and has since served the international community through editorial leadership and sustained advocacy for emergent scholars. Her work on decolonizing knowledge production and critical approaches to medium-of-instruction policy reflects a career-long dedication to justice and equity in language education.
Dr. Lin’s commitment to mentorship has shaped the professional trajectories of doctoral students and early-career researchers across Asia, Canada, and beyond. She takes particular joy in seeing her students find their own voices and forge their own paths in the field. Her recent work explores how generative AI can be engaged ethically and responsibly in language education—developing the PAA Model and 4T Lenses to help teachers foster student agency rather than replace human connection.
She continues to advance AAAL’s mission by fostering inclusive scholarly spaces where diverse voices and epistemologies can flourish.
Congratulations, Angel!
