AAAL Workshop: AI in Applied Linguistics: Using ChatGPT in the Language Classroom
Members Only - Must be signed in to register.
The Spring 2025 Workshop for the AAAL Professional Development Subcommittee is intended as a follow-up to the January Webinar on "AI in Applied Linguistics." The Webinar focused on the theoretical side of employing AI in the language classroom; the Workshop is planned to be a "hands-on" session in which the attendees will be given explicit instruction on how to use AI technology--specifically ChatGPT--to help students to learn a language.
The two speakers are Dr. Soroush Sabbaghan (University of Calgary; Alberta, Canada) and Dr. Austin Pack (Brigham Young University - Hawaii), both of whom have deep expertise and long experience with applying AI technology in educational settings. Dr. Sabbaghan is an Associate Professor and teaches on the topic of Generative AI; he is the Chair of the Language and Literacy Specialization Area and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Dr. Pack is an Assistant Professor of English Language Teaching and Learning; his research interests include the psychology of language learning, motivation in language teaching and learning, complex dynamic systems, network analysis, and technology-enhanced language learning.
Both speakers will focus on practical applications of ChatGPT for teaching and learning in a language class. In a Breakout session, AAAL members will talk about how to apply AI technology in their own classes. The event will end with a "Going Forward" session to discuss possible plans for employing ChatGPT in educational settings and discuss issues related to that effort.
