Engaging the Public with Your Work in Applied Linguistics

Members Only - Must be signed in to register.

The Workshop will focus on the potential benefits and problems of using media outlets (e.g., electronic forms such as blogs, podcasts, and social media as well as traditional forms like radio, TV, and newspapers) to share information with the public about topics in applied linguistics. Interacting with the media and the public is not typically taught in graduate school courses, but academics and researchers are increasingly encouraged to participate in public forums to provide viewpoints on important issues, to increase understanding of the work of scientists, and to improve public trust in research practices and educational institutions.

The speakers for the session are Dr. Judith Kroll (University of California, Irvine) and Dr. James Coda (University of Tennessee, Knoxville); both have experience with using various types of media in their professional work and they will offer their expertise and advice to the Workshop participants.
