Woke, Hood and Hip Hop: Teaching and Learning for Justice in a Changing World

This paper explores how one Tongan American young woman ("Maklea") takes up a ‘woke’, ‘hood’ and ‘hip hop’ personae to negotiate her experiences with systemic racialized violence beside her Black, Latinx, and Polynesian peers within her small, working-class community. Specifically, this study examines how copula absence is appearing in Maklea's speech in ways that are (re)constituting ideologies around Polyness (i.e Polynesianness) and African Americanness, Hip Hop-ness and African American Language, with implications for teaching and learning for justice in a changing world.
