Black Joy in the Hour of Chaos: Rhetoric, Resistance and Community on #BlackTwitter
Share |
While the topic of #BlackTwitter has received significant media and growing scholarly attention, very little of that attention has taken up the question of what discursive features allow it to operate as such a powerful space for Black community online. This talk will explore Black language, discourse and rhetorical features on Black Twitter generally, and as they operate  in this contemporary moment of activism. From the sharing of memes and music to phenomena like social watching to specifically Black activist and advocacy campaigns, Black Twitter demonstrates a "changing same" in Black language and rhetorical traditions: built on modes of discourse and persuasive strategies rooted in Black oral traditions and yet constantly shifting more quickly than updated passwords and software applications.
