Looking Back to Move Forward: Hiphop Lang. Ideology and Movements for Black Studies-50 Years Later
Share |
This paper examines cycles of mutual influence among international Black social movements, Black studies and Hiphop language ideology. Black arts movements influenced the genesis of Black studies as well as Hiphop, with an emphasis on knowledge and pride in language and culture. Lyrical and linguistic endeavors of Hiphop artists delivered Black Studies learning outcomes to a public audience, cut and mixed into musical and later visual form. Likewise, Hiphop language ideology and linguistic complexity found its way into Black/ Africana/ African American studies departments as sites of study and analysis as well as public engagement.
