Multidialectal and Multilingual Practices in L2 Arabic Learning Contexts

Recent scholarship in applied linguistics has challenged monolingual ideologies in second language (L2) learning contexts, and encouraged multilingual translanguaging practices that illuminate the fluidity of language boundaries to bring learners’ prior linguistic repertoires to the forefront.

Drawing on a multidialectal and multilingual translanguaging perspective, the panelists will share insights from their research and pedagogical practices to discuss the need for adopting multilingual approaches to the field of L2 Arabic.

The session is open to AAAL members and non-members alike and significant time will be allotted for discussion. A recording will be available for registered participants who are unable to attend.

Speakers:

Khaled Al Masaeed, Carnegie Mellon University
Emma Trentman, University of New Mexico
Lama Nassif, Williams College
Sonia Shiri, University of Arizona
