Cogent Education welcomes submissions to a special collection on ‘Chinese Character Acquisition and Instruction’.

This special issue includes studies which address the learning and teaching of Chinese characters. Learners of Chinese language have identified many challenges when learning Chinese characters. Hence, the special issue aims to:

  • identify the challenges of learning Chinese characters by learners of different backgrounds
  • identify factors which influence character learning
  • investigate current teaching and/or learning strategies of Chinese characters
  • conducting experiments which will improve Chinese character learning and teaching

Relevant research topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Chinese character learning/teaching strategies
  • Factors in the learning of Chinese characters
  • Radical awareness and word acquisition in Chinese character learning
  • Chinese vocabulary acquisition
  • Chinese character learning by alphabetic learners
  • Chinese character learning by heritage learners
  • Chinese character teaching methods
  • Challenges of learning Chinese characters
  • Anxiety of learning to read and write Chinese characters
  • Effective ways of teaching Chinese characters
  • Computer-assisted Chinese character learning
