The Centre for Language Studies (CLS) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) organises a biennial international conference on foreign language teaching and learning. The conference aims at bringing together academics, researchers and professionals from Asia and beyond for a productive and rewarding exchange of insights, experiences, views and perspectives on current and future developments in foreign language teaching and learning. The last seven CLaSICs have met with resounding success, attracting participants from all over the world.

We are pleased to announce the Eighth CLS International Conference (CLaSIC 2018) to be held from 6 to 8 December 2018. The theme of the conference is:

Call for Papers

Motivation, identity and autonomy play important roles in the language learning process. Motivation can be of different types (e.g. integrative vs. instrumental or intrinsic vs. extrinsic) and intensity, and various theories (e.g. Self-determination Theory, Attribution Theory, and Theory of the Possible Selves) have been proposed to explain language learning motivation. Identity refers to the dynamic representations of self that a language learner adopts, constructs, maintains or negotiate, in relation to his social, cultural and political contexts. Autonomy in learning is the active involvement in and willingness to take charge of one’s learning as well as the capability to do so.

What are the interrelations between the motivation, identity and autonomy? What is the impact on motivation when language learners are encouraged to speak of themselves, and to express and engage their own identities through the language? At the same time, it is well established that motivation has an influence on the autonomy of language learners, but what is the nature of this influence and to what extent are these two notions linked? Are some types of motivation more significant for effective language learning than others? How and to what extent does enabling foreign language learners to ‘speak as themselves’ in the target language with their own identities promote language learner autonomy? Or can identity be seen as a goal or product of autonomous learning?

CLaSIC 2018 provides a platform for researchers, scholars and practitioners in foreign language education for an invigorating discourse on theoretical conceptions and approaches, research insights, and practical experiences from the various sub-fields and sub-themes listed below, as they pertain to motivation, identity and autonomy in foreign language teaching and learning.

The CLaSIC 2018 Organising Committee invites submissions for Paper and Poster Presentations on one of the following fourteen sub-themes and sub-fields, as they relate to the conference theme:
