Drama as a creative tool for critical reflection and pedagogy Abstract
Share |

Weaving together the narratives of Filipino students in Canada who have experienced long-term separation from their migrant caregiver mothers, the play “Waiting” (Darvin, 2016) has been written and performed for an audience of teachers, administrators, and community members. By sharing the process through which this play was produced, this paper discusses how drama can amplify the voices of learners who have been silenced by the material conditions of their migration so that they may be heard by educators and policymakers. Drawing on Gallagher’s (2014) “pedagogy of the real”, this paper demonstrates how the creative assembling of these voices through an emotionally charged medium can enable research that not only promotes critical understanding but also instigates action.
