2004 AAAL Graduate Student Travel Grants (Revised January 13, 2004)

The deadline for application for AAAL's Graduate Student Travel Awards has been moved back to Monday, February 2 (at 5:00 pm). The deadline for faculty references is Monday, February 9. Students who have already applied do not need to apply again. Below is the revised call for applications:

Purpose: To help support travel (and some expenses) of 6 graduate student members of AAAL to the 2004 annual meeting in Portland, Oregon.

Eligibility: Applicants must be current members of AAAL (at time of application) who are in a university Master's or Ph.D. program in applied linguistics or a related field.

Amount: A maximum of 6 awards will be given: $800.00 each for up to four Ph.D. student awards and up to two Master's student awards. In addition, the awards include the waiving of conference registration fees. Two of the six awards — the ETS Graduate Student Travel Scholarship and the Multilingual Matters Graduate Student Travel Scholarship — will be awarded to the two top-ranked Ph.D. student applicants.

Recommendations: Request a letter of recommendation from a professor in your graduate program who is familiar with your work (by February 9). An email message containing a link to a recommendation submission form will be sent to your Faculty Recommender upon receipt of your Travel Grant application.

Please make sure to you have received a committment from your Faculty Recommender BEFORE filling out the Travel Grant Submission Form!

The letter should state your professor's estimation of:
  1. Your academic work and promise in the field of applied linguistics
  2. Your personal attributes relevant to a career in applied linguistics
  3. Your level of need for financial assistance as provided for by this grant

Rating criteria for Graduate Student Travel Awards:

  1. Applicant's current contributions to and promise in the field of applied linguistics;
  2. Extent to which the applicant will benefit from attending the AAAL meeting;
  3. Applicant's personal attributes relevant to a career in applied linguistics; and
  4. Applicant's level of need for financial assistance.
